S ami is situated on the large bay of Sami in the island of Kefalonia. The port is always bustling with fishermen. It is also an important harbour for the connections with the other Ionian Islands, the Peloponnesos and South Italy. In the surroundings of Sami you find many caves. In the whole of Greece there are over 7.500 caves. The Drogarati cave is situated a few kilometres before Sami near the village of Chaliotata. This cave has many stalactites. The room is called the Apotheosis because of the good acoustics. Now and then a concert is performed here. Near the village of Karavomilos the cave of Melissani is found with the subterranean Melissani Lake. There is a gap in the roof through which the sun shows a brilliant range of colouring, especially in the afternoon. The water from the lake comes from Argostoli, a route of 15 kilometres under the ground. This is a unique geological phenomenon, called katavothres. The spot where the water in Argostoli disappears is near the tavern of Thalassomilos. A boat trip on this clear water under the stalactites with partly dark and partly sunny surroundings is amazing.

In East Sami there are still remains of the town wall, 2300 years old. In the surroundings you find the beautiful beach of Antisamos. The beach has a unique place in between the many green hills. This beach was one of the locations for the famous film: Captain Corelli's Mandoline. Sami is rather flat, so the surroundings are pleasant for cycling and walking tours.
