P yrgos; the capital of the province of Ilia. It is a city with about 30.000 inhabitants. The town got its name from the tall tower of Tsernotas. In the centre you find the Saki Karayeorga square which is forbidden for cars. On the left of the square are an Apollo theatre and two large statues representing Apollo and Athens.
Furthermore there are neoclassical market halls by architect Ernst Ziller. The poet Yoryis Pavlopoulos was born in Pyrgos in 1924 and lived here the greater part of his life. His poems have been translated into German, French, Italian, Russian and Polish. Every year there is the Olympia film festival with about 200 films from 27 countries.
