M eteora is a area in central Greece with places like Kalambaka and Kastraki. The road from Igoumenitsa to Meteora is ruffing but breathtaking. They are working on a highway (2006) up to 60 Km from the area. From Volos and Larissa is the area easier to reach. This area is known for his monastery's build high up on rocky pillars. From the 11th century monks came to that area. In 1336 the monastery Mega Metéoron was founded 623 m high up by the monk Athanasios.
23 other monastery's followed. With nets and rope and wooden ladders the monks transported all the necessary goods and persons up. At a specific point of time there was autonomous community of monks in 24 monasteries' that lived totally secluded of the rest of the world. After 6 violent century's only 6 monastery's where left in a verily good condition. Some of them are still habited. Sins 1988 there are Unesco world heritance. Even as nature and culture. The Meteora is one of the best-organized climbing areas with more than 600 paths to climb. There is also the possibility to abseil along the rocks.
